About This GameThe year is 2030. People like me see them as interactive books or something closer to interactive theater rather than a video game. This genre is popular in Japan and slowly getting popularity from western audience. What it might be surprising for some people is pricing of games like this. Pricing of top VN might be close to AAA titles what could surprise players unfamiliar with this genre. If you never played/read VN before I can assure you that this title is a good place to start. Just make sure that you start playing Root After first. Root Before answers some of the questions in Root After at the very beginning and you want to avoid that.

The premise of the story is interesting. Execution was perfect, however as many others have said, the longer you go into the story the more "dragged on" it feels. It does have some interesting moments, and the unusual choice system is a really good aspect of this VN. Salyu is definitely best girl Story: 7.5 /10 Characters: 7.8 /10 Is it worth the original full price? Maybe. All in all it honestly depends on whether you like these sorts of sci-fi Anime VN genre. I'd reccommend getting it while it's on sale if you're curious enough! . I underestimated this game. Thought it was going to be a simple visual novel. In and out. Twenty minute adventure. Nope. Ended up being a 40+ hour emotional rollercoaster ride. Highly recommend this game to anyone wanting to delve themselves into an extremely great story, but be prepared to devote lots of time if you want to know the truth.. I got this with the Sekai Project Humble Bundle. This game stood out, since it wasn't about catgirls. Let me just say this has been one of my favorite visual novels. On the surface, a lot of plot elements seem pretty standard and predictable. This VN impressed me by having a lot of layers of twists and turns. I'll give you an example, over the course of this VN and its routes. I went from suspicious, to trusting, to absoluting hating a certain character, only to end up trusting them all over again, with a very high opinion of them. The complexity keeps things interesting despite the long run time. The only negative, is that the second path, route B, does drag a little with exposition. But that might be because of how intense and quick the first route feels. I couldn't put this game down, and logged my 37 hours (at time of review) in less than a week (and I work full time). It's worth the full price, but look for sales and you'll find one sooner or later!. I have to say im pretty new to the Visual Novel Genre but Root Double rly gave me a blast. You play it for the first time and think: "Hey that is a pretty cool setting, a lot of interesting stuff happens and since you can decide how much you 'trust' others (or even yourself) you can influence the story in whole" After hell a lot of play time you land in a some kind dissatisfying ending, but nevertheless enjoyed your time trying things and even achieving a lot of things. Ofc you can try to figure out every little possibility by yourself but i highly recommend a guide (not at first or even second playthrough, but when you feel like you dont want to fail all the time anymore). Because there unfold so many further aspects of the story with every additional playthrough (or better said: route) I took. First time I didnt even see half of the important chars, then I saw them and understood their connections, afterwards it comes out that they had even deeper connections then you thought they would have and so its a really joyful ride to find everything out this game has to offer. I highly recommend it, cause of its incredible story (including so many different routes and outcomes to experience), its vivid characters and also technically speaking full japanese audio and skipping options. The only bad about it is, that i repeats itself many times.....more precisely i mean this: (Keeping in mind you can always skip scenes you have already read up to that point where you havent) You play a scene with one unimportant decision, then, second try, you make the other decision. Ends up, that just one character say one other word, but everything else stays exactly the same. But since its another scene you cannot simply skip that "already read" part. Other example: You get to see many scenes from multiple perspectives. And also here some perspectives are simply not relevant and simply boring, But since every third sentences is "Oh i think this looks great" you cannot skip it either. Dont get me wrong you can basically skip anything. The issue with this parts is only that u might miss something then. Oh yeah and the music is pretty cool...has a nice set of songs for every kind of situation as well as unique character songs.. Got this game in Humble Bundle's Sekai Project. Well worth its price here though (discount or not). Overall: This is the first visual novel I have played. And honestly, it has a better story then all the other games I have ever played. This surprised me. The long Campaign is over 50 hours with 30 hours of content. Player choice does affect the world significantly, as this has 39 endings, mostly bad. Sometimes, in order to make the right choice the main character needed to have low confidence in himself, which is something I have personally never seen in any video game before. Solid background score and sound design. Routes: Both routes are very good (Root A and Root B) and there is some content generated based on what endings you get. Root B may seem boring, but picks up steam significantly in the last third of the game, and its finale (just pre and post credits) will explain the events in the start of Root A. Characters: 8 of the 9 characters you interact with are amazing with great voice acting backing up a very rich backstory, 1 (lets call them: bonde ninja) is pretty annoying. Both protagonists are very well developed as well. Lore: Possibly has the least plot holes I have seen in any work. I am not joking, on my first playthrough, I noticed and predicted plot events based on information I got, while people may say that this makes the game "predictable", no its not, its that nothing feels like an♥♥♥♥♥pull, and you feel rewarded when you see your prediction become true or realize that you misunderstood that information(remember this game allows the main character to have low confidence in his abilities). World of Root Double has solid foundations and does not rely on Deus ex Machina.. Absolutely incredible in every sense of the word. Root Double is one of the best visual novels currently on steam at time of writing and it is WELL worth picking up. As you can see from my play time it's a pretty sizable read but in a good way. Root Double has an excellent story, great presentation and sounds (with pretty nice sound design as well) and some of the BEST characters I think I have ever seen in a visual novel. Root Double's strongest points are by far its characters. They're incredibly well developed, likable and memorable. The story itself is excellent too, I won't go into it much more than the steam description says but just know that there is far more to it than meets the eye. The pacing is pretty solid as well. While the game can slow down at points with its pacing it is nowhere near as bad as the pacing of other vn's such as ever17. While Ever17 is more of a stop, go, stop, go pacing affair Root Double, while slowing down at points never really comes to a screeching hault at all. If you're looking for a solid visual novel though with great pacing, great characters and an interesting plot then pick this one up. Don't listen to those people who say that Root B is trash and boring (the slower pacing of Root B manages to pay off big time later on believe me), just play this VN. It's well worth your money and time believe me.. This is actually my first-ever Steam review, but I felt that this VN tended to go under people's radars, and I'd like to do my part to introduce Root Double to anyone interested in this sort of thing. A lot of people have compared Root Double to Ever17, and I agree completely. The story is fascinating in its lore and setting, and plays around a LOT with the idea of mistaken identity, in all possible senses of the term. There are some truly spirited plot twists here, many times nested within eachother, and yet it's all so well-plotted as to never become confusing or needlessly convoluted. Every character is fleshed-out and sympathetic, and the postgame content only solidifies this fact. The music is quite well-composed, fitting well to the surrounding context and displaying a wide variety in terms of mood and instrumentation. I still get a number of pieces from this game stuck in my head, and I couldn't be happier. In some ways, the far-out plotting and at-times intensely dark storytelling make me think of the Zero Escape series, another of which I am an enthusiast; however, this obviously does not extend to the gameplay of Root Double, which is entirely text\/image-based. All in all, fans of well-plotted, well-designed visual novels really should give this one an honest try. I disagree with those who argue the game is overlong or has long dry spells: a lot of the less-eventful spans, I would argue, are absolutely necessary for establishing sympathy (no pun intended) with the characters, without which the myriad plot twists (especially en route to the True Ending) would no have anywhere near as much impact. It's honestly hard to do true justice to this highly-overlooked VN, but I should point out one more thing: the reader gets a LOT of content for their money, thereby explaining the admittedly-high cost of admission. TL;DR: A must-buy for fans of the storytelling style of Ever17 and Zero Escape. An excellent VN, overall.
